Tips to Stay Stress-Free in the New Year

With the holidays over and a new year beginning, stress management is the key to success. Stress can sabotage virtually every aspect of your health, contributing to problems including mood disorders, fatigue, stomach upset, and even chronic pain.

Thankfully, there are many strategies that you can use to stay stress-free in the new year. Here are our top picks:

Don’t Skimp on Sleep.

Starving your body of the sleep that it needs can translate to high-stress levels. When you sleep, your levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, naturally decrease. Getting enough sleep also helps regulate your mood, judgment, and memory.

So, this year, resolve to get at least seven to nine hours of sleep each night. A relaxing, screen-free nightly ritual may help you achieve this goal.

Focus on Mindfulness.

Stress can build up throughout the day without us noticing. So, aim to check in with your body a few times throughout the day. Take this time to address any needs you may be addressing, whether it’s thirst, hunger, muscle tension, etc. Then, take a few deep breaths, in through your nose and out through your mouth, to stop stress in its tracks.

Find Support.

Managing stress isn’t easy in today’s hectic world, which is why we can all benefit from seeking out support. Make sure to stay connected to friends and family, even when your schedule is busy. If your stress levels become too much to manage or you’re experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression, consider reaching out to a mental health professional for support.
