What Causes Thyroid Nodules to Grow?

Thyroid nodules are lumps that develop in the thyroid gland. In most cases, thyroid nodules are benign. But, they can produce an excess of thyroxine, the main thyroid hormone, and lead to unwanted symptoms. Understanding the possible causes of thyroid nodules can help you avoid these symptoms and preserve your hormonal health.

Common Causes of Thyroid Nodules

Thyroid nodules result from an overgrowth of thyroid gland cells. While the exact cause of this overgrowth is unknown, thyroid nodules can be categorized by type.

The types of thyroid nodules include:

  • Thyroid cysts are at least partially filled with fluid and generally don’t lead to cancer.
  • Colloid nodules, the most common type of thyroid nodule, are benign and don’t spread outside the thyroid gland.
  • Multinodular goiter is an enlarged thyroid that consists of multiple nodules. These nodules are usually benign.
  • Inflammatory nodules result from chronic thyroid inflammation and can be painful.
  • Hyperfunctioning or toxic thyroid nodules produce an excess of thyroid hormone, which can lead to hyperthyroidism.

Thyroid nodules are only cancerous in 5 to 10% of cases. Cancerous nodules often don’t cause symptoms, which can make them difficult to identify. However, most forms of thyroid cancer respond positively to treatment.
