Medicare provides medical coverage for 60 million individuals. For people over the age of 65, as well as younger individuals with disabilities, Medicare covers the cost of essential healthcare services.
In the past, Medicare didn’t offer coverage for acupuncture. But, in 2020, the Centers for Medicare began to provide acupuncture coverage for individuals with chronic lower back pain.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a treatment that was developed in traditional Chinese medicine. It involves inserting extremely thin stainless steel needles into specific acupuncture points on the body. This can stimulate the flow of vital energy, known as qi, throughout the body.
Research has proven acupuncture to be effective for conditions ranging from low back pain to osteoarthritis to migraine and more. With this in mind, acupuncture can help treat several conditions that impact the 65-and-older population.
Medicare Coverage For Acupuncture
Medicare Part B provides coverage for up to 12 acupuncture visits in 90 days for chronic lower back pain. 12 acupuncture treatments are the typical course of care, although patients with chronic health problems may require more sessions for lasting relief. Medicare patients who show improvement can get up to 20 acupuncture visits within a 12-month period.
Please note that deductibles and copays may be applied to acupuncture treatments.
An estimated 31 million Americans have lower back pain at any given moment. Acupuncture is a natural, drug-free treatment that can help alleviate lower back pain by:
- Stimulating the release of natural chemicals in the body that help produce a sense of wellbeing, such as endorphins
- Stimulating the nervous system for pain relief
- Stimulating the body’s electromagnetic impulses, which can improve the body’s ability to manage pain
