Male Female Hormone Therapy:
Age-related hormonal declines contribute to the signs and symptoms of aging. Bioidentical hormones—which are identical to those produced in the human body— can be used effectively when balanced appropriately to rejuvenate the body and mind.
What is Natural Hormone Replacement Therapy?
One of the hallmarks of getting older is a decline in the absolute amount and a shift in the balance of the levels of various hormones in men and women. Hormones are messenger molecules that impact a variety of activities in our bodies. Production of estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid, DHEA, melatonin, human growth hormone, and other hormones tapers off after we reach our 20s and 30s. Many experts agree that age-related hormonal deficiencies contribute to the signs and symptoms of aging.
Since ancient times it was believed that replacing hormones would restore youth and increase longevity. The ancient Greeks, Egyptians, and Indians ingested extracts from animal testes in an attempt to restore declining sexual performance and energy. Dr Charles Edouard Brown- Sequard was one of the first physicians to study the internal secretions now called hormones and to discover the importance of adrenal glands.
After conducting experiments on himself, he advocated the injection of a genital-gland extract to prolong and invigorate life. In 1899, he stated at a meeting of the French Societe de Biologie that the ground up extracts of guinea pig and dog testicles that he had self injected had taken 30 years off his age and that he recovered at least all the strength he had possessed many years before.
Today one can still find hormone glandular extracts for ingestion or homeopathic tinctures of hormones. Herbal formulas are also available that can mimic a variety of hormone activities. Bio-identical hormones are a manufactured form of hormones that are identical to the hormones produced in the human body.
Bio-identical hormones can be individually prescribed in different doses and in different routes of administration to balance the identical molecules that can be measured in the body. Manufactured hormones that are not molecularly identical to the human hormones have been the most common form of hormone prescribed by physicians for hormone deficiency symptoms due to minimal knowledge dissemination regarding the use of more natural alternatives.
Because non-human identical hormone formulations do not accurately correspond to the body’s hormone levels, they have been commonly prescribed without the use of hormone test analysis, and with treatment based primarily on patient’s reporting of symptom relief, side effects, or complications.
How Does Natural Hormone Replacement Therapy Work?
At MindBodySpirit Care, we have had the greatest success with an individualized approach to hormone balancing . We begin with a comprehensive laboratory evaluation that includes hormone levels measured primarily in blood and saliva, . After discussing the various options to optimize hormone balance including diet, herbs, glandular extracts, homeopathy, and hormone replacement, we chose the approach most suited. When warranted, we prescribe a precise dosage of bioidentical hormones that are individually prepared at a compounding pharmacy. Each patient is then monitored carefully through regular follow-up hormone panels to ensure we get symptom relief at the lowest possible dosage. Once balance is restored, we may monitor with testing at the time of an annual exam or as needed on individual basis. In certain individuals we may utilize other medical tests that include ultrasound, bone density, and other diagnostic tools to identify other chemical or physical imbalances and to assess health risk factors.
The goal of hormone balancing is to improve hormone levels and function in order to support an optimal performance of our mind and body. We can then look and feel better than we have in years, with the physical and mental youthfulness of our physical prime . The individualized program of bioidentical hormones is based on the age and medical status of each individual. As our approach to natural hormone balancing has been evolving over the years, we are grateful to physicians like John R. Lee, M.D., Jonathan Wright, M.D. and Christiane Northrup, M.D., who have expanded our clinical knowledge and experience.
